The rescheduled Junior Champion Club event, originally washed out in the dismal Easter holidays back in April, was played last week (Friday 1st June) on a fine, warm day at the Verulam Golf Club in St Albans, famous for its synonymous ties with Samuel Ryder, the donor of the Ryder Cup.

The event was originally scheduled to be played at Chesfield Downs Golf & Country Club, but unfortunately the club could not host on the rearranged date. Despite this the team from Chesfield Downs of brothers James & Jack Wilson, along with Luke Scholes obviously liked the new venue just as much as their home course as they amassed an incredible 87 stableford points in the best 2 scores from 3 format.

Luke Scholes achieved a best of the day 46 points from his 24 handicap, while younger brother Jack Wilson scored 41 points.

Scoring on the day was exceptional, helped by the course playing fairly benign due to the heavy rains earlier in the week softening and taking much of the ‘fire’ away the course somewhat. 21 players achieved 36 points or better, with 7 players returning scores of 40 points or better. Harry Johnson of Porters Park and George Castle of Moor Park both shot great rounds of 72 (level) and 73 (+1) gross respectively.

The Moor Park team of Toby Benton, the aforementioned George Castle and Rio Saigal finished as Runners Up with a score of 78 points, good enough in most years to take the title. Essendon, represented by Louis Densham, Liam Purcell and Sam Linskey would finish in 3rd place on 75 points, on a countback situation from West Herts.

The CSS on the day was 71 against a par and SSS of 72.

Chesfield Downs now progress to represent Hertfordshire at the England Golf Junior Champion Club Final, played at Frilford Heath in Oxfordshire as part of England Golf Week in August.
